The Lone Star Lights

A personal bucket list item of mine was finally checked on the night of October 10, 2024 when the Aurora Borealis, aka, the Northern Lights made an appearance in North Texas. I had seen all the news stories and even Facebook posts of my family and friends who live in places where you wouldn’t think you would ever see the aurora, and a lot of them were capturing beautiful photos of the lights from their homes.

Living in Texas, I had convinced myself the only way I was ever going to see them in my lifetime was to take a trip to Alaska, Iceland or somewhere else north of the Arctic Circle. But on that night, the news was reporting that the Aurora Kp (planetary index), which is the scale used to measure the earth’s geomagnetic activity was unusually high, and the lights may be visible farther south than usual. Still unconvinced that I would ever be able to capture this amazing phenomenon on my own, I ventured outside with my family, out to the front of our property, went across the street, and pointed my camera north. And there it was. Bucket. List. Item. Checked.

Here’s hoping for more of these moments and photo opportunities in 2025!
